Artist Statement
My paintings are representational narratives which mark memories and moments of my journey growing up and growing older in a small-town, southern mountain culture. The images are allegories for experiences, relationships and stereotypes–a way to materialize responses to things real and imagined. I feel that I can best express my ideas figuratively, but Images from nature, particularly animals and flowers, almost always emerge as symbols for meaning. I have a strong affiliation with nature, having spent much time hiking and exploring trails and woods growing up in the mountains. My artwork develops as I rework the composition and refine my intention. There are usually several versions of one final image underneath each painting. I am captivated by layering media (printed paper, ink, paint) and then scratching and scraping back into the layers to reveal traces of images, colors, and textures underneath.
My roots are in the mountains of North Carolina. I grew up and live in Boone and raised four children here. I earned a BS in Art Education from Appalachian State University and taught studio art for thirty-five years at Watauga High School and Appalachian State. Since retiring, working in my studio is a priority. I am represented by Carlton Gallery in Banner Elk NC, and exhibit regionally. My work has been juried into several exhibitions including the North Carolina Artists Exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum in Raleigh.
